Olivia has maintained both its intensity as a strong tropical storm and its path straight toward the Hawaiian islands.

Residents on Hawaii’s Big Island are discovering that their homeowner’s insurance covers all sorts of damage — but not from lava, smoke and other volcanic hazards as the Kilauea eruption enters its fourth month.

Flash flood warnings were issued on Tuesday for the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with residents on the north coast told to evacuate and others left stranded by high water as the remnants of Hurricane Lane drenched the archipelago and a new storm brewed in the Pacific Ocean.

A tropical storm developed in the eastern Pacific Ocean that may be heading west near Hawaii. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tropical Storm Miriam has formed about 2,000 miles east of the Hawaiian islands.

Tropical Storm Lane, greatly diminished from the major hurricane it once was, drifted away from the Hawaiian coast on Saturday, but lingering showers threatened to trigger more flooding and landslides.

The West Maui wildfires left behind a trail of destruction larger than initially thought. On Saturday afternoon, Maui fire officials said the number of structures damaged in the fast-moving Lahaina wildfire grew to 22. Some 30 vehicles were also burned along with a base yard that housed heavy equipment.

Hurricane Lane weakened as it marched toward Hawaii, but it’s list of life-threatening calamities is still going strong. The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm Thursday, even as it unleashed torrential rainfall, flooding and landslides over parts of Hawaii’s Big Island, along with dangerous surf and high winds.

As emergency shelters opened, rain began to pour down and cellphone alerts went out, the approaching Hurricane Lane started to feel real for Hawaii residents. Lane was forecast to continue its northwest turn into the islands Thursday and be the most powerful storm to hit Hawaii since Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

Hurricane Lane strengthened to a Category 5 storm on Tuesday as it charged toward Hawaii where residents braced for “life threatening” winds and flooding, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Hurricane Lane could come dangerously close to the Hawaiian Islands late this week, and while impacts such as strong winds, heavy rain and battering surf are likely to occur, the severity of those threats is still uncertain.

Hurricane Hector regained strength in the eastern Pacific late on Sunday and swelled into a Category 4 storm again with sustained 140 mph winds as it stayed on target to possibly hit Hawaii by midweek, officials said.

A “collapse explosion” at the summit of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Wednesday sent a surge of lava that destroyed structures in an evacuated housing development, geologists and civil defense authorities said.
