U.S. safety investigators in central Texas began gathering evidence on Sunday into what caused the crash of a hot air balloon that killed 16 people after it hit a power line and plummeted to the ground in flames.

Over the past two years, General Motors has recalled millions of vehicles over airbag issues, many related to Takata safety devices deploying too forcefully. Now, the company is recalling nearly 290,000 Chevrolet sedans for a different reason: the airbags might not deploy in a crash.

Police say thieves have used a stolen truck to smash through the brick wall of a North Texas gun store and steal firearms.

Two people were killed when a Bell Helicopter aircraft they were testing crashed in a rural area about 40 miles south of Dallas. A Federal Aviation Administration statement said the Bell 525 Relentless helicopter was destroyed in the accident Wednesday in Ellis County.

Several box cars have derailed and are engulfed in flames following a collision between two freight trains in the Texas Panhandle. Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Bryan Witt says the accident occurred Tuesday morning near the town of Panhandle, about 25 miles northeast of Amarillo.

A Patton Village police officer and an 11-year-old child were killed during a police chase late Sunday. The chase started near Highway 242 and Highway 59 after police responded to reports of a man exposing himself at a Valero gas station.

Three people were injured in an accident that left one car in a lake on Monday afternoon. Police say it happened behind Stripes at 19th and Milwaukee. Police tell us a 2005 Blue Hyundai 4-door was turning onto Milwaukee Avenue from the CVS driveway to head south on Milwaukee.

An apartment building in a standoff with Lake Granbury held its ground Monday while residents finished packing up all they could carry out. City officials ordered them out Friday after recent rains toppled stone retaining walls, allowing earth to erode beneath the building.
